Assortment

The assortment is extensive and has many options for shapes and sizes. Basically the tin can packaging for food and the medical industry can be divided into ones that close with a plastic closure or with a lid. The more solid fillings use a lid and the liquid ones use a plastic closure. There are developments in the market, for marketing purposes the shapes of the cans are increasingly developed to customer specifications.

Also the seamed-lid cans (with lid) have been subject to change. Because of the environment and cost efficiency the weight of the cans has been reduced without any loss of sturdiness. Together with the possibility of an attractive print you have an optimal packaging for your product. You can obtain a distinctive position in the market.

Food cans are used for (olive)oils, vegetables, fish, fruit, meat, soup, ready meals and pet food, this particularly because of the good protection of the filling good and the long conservation. Also the packaging of pharmaceuticals in these cans is possible as long as the production meets the legal requirements (see below).

Protection and legislation

For packaging food products there is strict legislation. The inner and the outer coating of the packaging has to meet the FDA* requirements.

* The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or USFDA) is an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, one of the United States federal executive departments, responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety, tobacco products, dietary supplements, prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs (medications), vaccines, biopharmaceuticals, blood transfusions, medical devices, electromagnetic radiation emitting devices (ERED), veterinary products, and cosmetics.

Print

Food market packaging can be printed in different ways: labelling, offset or digital printing.

Closures

The tin can packaging for food or medicine is very diverse in form and type. Independent of the shape the closure is a lid, aluseal or a plastic closure.

The best known food can is the seamed lid can (easy opening or flat lid). However, pails with lid and latch ring closure are also used by our customers. The air-tightness of the packaging is an important requirement. Seamed lids are closed with a closing machine “seamed” around the body thus guaranteeing freshness. Tin can packaging with a latch ring closure or a latch lid are also very suitable for packaging food because of their high air tightness.

The best known tin can packaging with a plastic closure is one for lemonade or olive oil.

Ice-cream can

For a major client we designed a can that is suitable for packaging ice-cream. The can is filled with ice-cream and then closed with a coloured plastic lid. The colour of the lid indicates the content and the flavour (e.g. yellow=banana, red=strawberry etc.). The filled can is placed in the refrigerator. The can is coated on the inside (FDA approved) and it has gold lacquer on the outside (also FDA approved). Every part of the packaging is now protected so there is no possibility of any reaction of humidity and the tinplate of the can. This is a very important feature because the ice-cream cans go in and out of the freezer several times.
