Tight Head and Open Head drums are manufactured from black-plated steel with a thickness of at least 0.5 mm. This steel packaging is suited for the heavy duty performance. When the capacity measure is more than 30 litres the demand on chemical packaging is such that thicker material is desired. This does not have to mean that all drums have a UN certification, although the majority of them has.
Some filling goods that are packaged in smaller measures of capacity (less than 30 litres) need a very high UN certification. This puts such a heavy demand on the packaging that you need a thickness of more than 0.5 mm.

Assortment
The steel drums are available in open and closed top. Open top drums close with a lid and ring. In the lid there is a possibility for a 2" or a ¾" closure to aid the pumping up and venting. Closed tops, the so-called Tight Head drums always have a 2" and a ¾" closure. The 2" aperture is to let the filling good out of the drum and the ¾" is for venting.
The smaller drums are available from 6 litres on. Standard measures of capacity for the larger ones are 60 and 200 litres (net).
Market
Open top drums, or Open Head drums are used when the filling good needs stirring or when there is a need to work fast. The ability to completely empty the Open Head drum is an important advantage, especially for filling goods with a high viscosity. The Tight Head drums are mainly used for low viscosity products. The more liquid the filling good is, the higher the UN certification has to be. Tight Head drums generally have a higher UN certification than Open Head drums. The opening of the Tight Head drum as well as that of the Open Head drum is easy to re-close manually.
Protection of the outside
Drums always have a round shape and this provides the extra sturdiness required in this market. This sturdiness makes these steel drums very suitable for long distance transport by several different means of transport. The smaller measures of capacity (up to 30 litres) have a handle or a lifting ring. The larger ones are not allowed to be lifted due to their heavy weight and therefore do not have a handle. Only the 60 and 80 litre drums have a conical (stackable) shape, all the other measures of capacity are shaped cylindrical. When the larger drums have a UN certification the body often contains one or more grooves to generate the required sturdiness.
Coating
Especially Open Head drums are provided with an inner coating. Several types of coating are possible. The filling goods that are packaged in drums can be fairly aggressive and over the years a very resistant line of coatings, that make the drums suitable for packaging these filling goods, has been developed. We have 60 and 200 litre drums with an inner coating in stock.
Finish
Because drums are made out of black-plated steel the outside is coloured. The colour is sprayed on the body, the bottom and the lid; this protects the outside of the drum against rust forming. The standard colours are industrial RAL colours. Some of the most commonly used RAL colours we keep in stock. You can also have your own colour sprayed on, but this requires a certain minimum order quantity.
